Gastric Band

It has the advantages of being safer, cheaper, and both reversible and versatile. It is also associated with lesser post op complications and recovery. For 30 years this procedure has been the first line choice for weight loss surgery.

The adjustable band is placed around the top of the stomach to limit food intake and cause satiety.

Am I eligible?

Yes as long as you have a BMI greater than 30.

Will I lose weight?

You will lose a steady 1 – 2 pounds a week, so by 6 months, you’ll have lost up to 50 pounds. As a guide, you can expect to lose at least 50/60% of your excess weight over the first 2 years.

What does the surgery involve?

There is no cutting or stapling of the stomach and there is no intestinal rerouting. The operation only takes approximately 1 hour and with minimal blood loss.

What are the health benefits of weight loss surgery?

  • Long term remission of type 2 diabetes. A Study by Dr Schaver showed that almost all patients remained free of insulin and adjunct medications for at least 3 years post op.
